London & Such
Hello friends!
A lot has been happening since our last update a month ago. As I write this, I am sitting in the Edinburgh Airport waiting to board my flight back home to Arizona and filled with an energetic buzz residual from the exhibition down in London. Tired as I might be, I am eager to get back home and jump into work.
With that, let’s check-in:
Young Furniture Makers Exhibition - As a reminder, both of my pieces made during my time in Scotland were shortlisted for awards at an exhibition in London. This exhibition is hosted by the Furniture Makers’ Company and presented in the heart of the city, showcasing new and emerging makers, and exposing them to industry professionals. While I did not win any of the awards, it was an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and experience. I am eternally grateful for the owners of both the Settle and the Little Cabinet with a View for allowing me to borrow the pieces for a week. The other furniture makers from the exhibition also deserve a massive shout out for making it into the show and standing on their feet for 12 hours, chatting about their work. It was a truly moving event. Check out the pictures and video below!
Shop move - The shop is moving! In the next month, during a large interior project, I’ll be packing up my 200 square foot shop and moving across town. While non of my moves are permanent, this one will allow for larger scale work and space to continue working on the techniques exhibited in my furniture during school.
Just off the bench - The most recent project to come out of the shop was a unique and custom hexagonal table made for everyday work. It was an interesting set of parameters including how to fill a space with a large enough table to sit 6 comfortably, fit through an old Flagstaff building, and be stout enough withstand even the most rowdy of meetings. I’ve linked to it here and have a picture below.
Up Next - The commission book is quite full with 3 interior projects and a few free standing pieces. I’ll share those projects as they finish. However, two things of note are coming up that might interest you, the reader and subscriber to my little company.
Grand Canyon Youth Annual Auction - on Saturday the 2nd of November, GCY will be having their annual fundraising event benefiting youth on educational outdoor expeditions. The evening starts with a social happy hour, then dinner, followed by a live storytelling performance. Hear stories from Grand Canyon & Southwest enthusiasts, experts, and advocates on the theme of impact. Why it matters to you? I’ll have at least one piece of furniture in the silent auction. The price typically starts well under both the value and market cost of the piece, and all proceeds go towards this great cause. Expect to see a coffee table with a starting bid of below $300.
Website purchasing - If all goes according to plan, sometime in the next 2 months you will see a new section on the website for a limited time only. I’m going to trial some small gift buying as mentioned in the last update. Stay tuned!
As always, I appreciate your support and thank you for allowing me to share with you. Please stay tuned and reach out if you have questions, furniture needs, or something else!
Cheers,
Jean-Philippe
